Are You Spring Cleaning With Toxins?

cleaning supplies

Every day I hear about a friend with cancer.  I don’t know if cancer is really on the rise, or if social media means I just find out about it more.  These aren’t strangers though.  These are my friends: some young, some old, some live near me, some are across the country.  The cancer part of our prayer list is really long.

I hate cancer.   No one knows the cause of an individual illess, unless there was a big environmental problem such as smoking or prolonged asbestos exposure that is glaring.

On the other hand there are chemicals that are KNOWN to cause cancer used in common every day products like baby shampoo, laundry soap, hand sanitizer, and air freshener.  We might not be able to avoid all risk factors leading to cancer, but we can do something about THIS.

Don’t be mislead.  Just making your own cleaning products will not keep you safe. If your recipe contains ammonia or bleach, it’s not safe.  Plus, many recipes such as homemade laundry detergent, are a combinations of purchased ingredients. Does the soap base for your homemade detergent have SLS, SLES, parabens or 1,4 Dioxine in it?  If it does, it’s not safe.

I made a video for you that scratches the surface of what you should look out for.  Below I’ve added a lot of links below to source the information that’s in the video.  If you want to do your own research, it’s a starting point.

I have been buying the non-toxic products that you are referring to for five years now. I still love getting my order every month and will never go back to my old way again. Good luck building your business.

Meredith. They are awesome! My only regret is not using them sooner. It took me 3 years to even try them, because I’m such a skeptic.

Wow Angela, so many great resources! Thanks for this extensive list. Learning about carcinogens and other toxins is still an overwhelming process for me and a journey I’ve been on. I’ve been cleaning with Norwex products for the past few years. Norwex aims to reduce chemicals in household and personal care products, and I’ve been slowly been phasing out harmful chemicals using these products. I know that you are ALL about being frugal too – these products are great for that too! Even though the initial cost is big, many of their microfibre products (that clean with just water) last for years and years to come, eliminating the need for continual purchasing of cleaning products. I’ve begun selling the products because they’re so fantastic (and I want to fill my house with them). Thanks for sharing!

Great post and video! We are not cleaning with toxins except if it isn’t really necessary! We have many clients with kids and the products we use to clean their houses are 100% eco friendly! Lovely post! Greets, Erith Carpet Cleaners Ltd.

Molly, I love it! I’m looking for professional home cleaners who might like to partner with me. It’s great to give your clients a natural option and protect yourself in the process. These products work as well as the toxic stuff, and costs less. So why not?

Cleaning products really matter… it is much safer to use green cleaning solutions, especially if you have a small kid at home. I am definitely a fan of non-toxic cleaners and my favorite and the most effective green method for me is cleaning with steam! Thank you for sharing this post! 🙂
