Which one do you like better?

This polka dot afghan was supposed to be part of Heather’s room reveal.  That was crazy.  As if I had time to sit and crochet with all the other projects.  But I’ve taken it with me for car rides and appointments and meetings, and now it’s time to make a decision on how to sew the squares together.

Do you like Rainbow?

Or Random?

There’s one square left to stitch up.  In rainbow mode it would be light blue.  In ‘random’ dark blue.

This was my inspiration photo: I didn’t have all the colors, so went more simply. I used only the small dot squares in solid colors.

I had originally thought to make mine random too.  But the rainbow has a nice orderly feeling to it.

I’ve been in bed for 2 1/2 days with a kidney infection (follow up appointment on Tuesday).  So if you follow me on Pinterest, I apologize for filling up your main page with Christmas ideas and crochet tutorials.  I decided while I lay (lie–hmmm, That’s why I teach choir) here I decided to get a jump start on Christmas planning.

I lost all humility and told my husband I AM A GENIUS.  You know why?  Last year on December 26th I took a few moments to take notes on our last Christmas, including what gifts went over well and are a definite re-do; what I’d like to do differently with decorations;  and updates for my Christmas card list. So when I went to brainstorm for Christmas 2013, half the work was done for me and the ideas were really good.

Like:  Make a bound photo book  for Great-Grandma.  Her mind isn’t clear and it’s hard for her to remember everyone’s names, so it will be easy to make that part of the book. And maybe if I start now on Teacher gifts, I’ll get them done on time….maybe.

Well, as a math teacher and fairly linear thinker, the rainbow really speaks to me. Which makes me wonder: what is Heathers basic mindset? Is she a linear, orderly type person? Then the rainbow might be best for her. Does she prefer the freedom of the randomness? Them go random. She’ll probably love it either way, but if you think you can match her general tendency it will be an even stronger attachment.

Jan, When she saw the rainbow one, she said “random.” But she didn’t stick around long enough to see the random one. She went next door to play. Which makes me wonder how much she cares, lol.

I say Random! My 9 and 4 year olds, Caleb and Molly, say Rainbow. My 7 year old, Noah, initially said random, but switched to rainbow after hearing what his siblings said.

Melanie, I love symmetry too. That’s why on the random one each horizontal row has a pattern, lol. I just couldn’t help it. But I tried to make it ok by not repeating any horizontal rows. When I look at the rainbow one something in me just feels more relaxed….but it wasn’t the original idea I was going for.

I love both and I think yours turned out better than your inspiration! Rainbows are really in right now so I think that one is super cute (I love the colors you went with too!) so I wonder if the random will be more timeless. Also, I’m totally into Christmas planning too! I already have a date on the calendar to gift wrap with girlfriends and we haven’t sent out Christmas cards for the last three years (bc of saving money!) but this year I scheduled a photo session with a girlfriend for a date in October so I have plenty of time to work on cards and also will start budgeting now for them. I look forward to you sharing all your ideas!

Kristine, Yay for you! I love Christmas, but if I leave everything to the end I turn into a stress momster and ruin the holiday for everyone. So little bits of planning here and there. I have my Christmas cards in queue ready to order (this is WAYYYYY early for me–as I usually wait until after Thanksgiving and am in a rush. But this year mine will go on the mail the day after Thanksgiving :).) But is Setpember too soon to order? If I wait will there be a coupon? Oh the things I worry about, lol.

Hi Lisa, It is crochet. If you click on the link for the inspiration photo, the pattern is there. I followed it exactly except used a solid color for the circle instead of ombre (though I love ombre–just couldn’t stomach buying that much yarn.) And instead of a chain space in the corner of the white, I filled it in with another triple. You’ll see as you go through the pattern.

I am a very orderly person and am not brave in choices but I must say I love the random pattern. It is beautiful and eye catching. Whatever you choose and Heather likes will be most important. Jane

Karen, Tell hubby thanks for chiming in! For some reason, when a man gives an opinion on things like this it makes me take notice, lol.

What about blocks of the same color together? Or if that doesn’t work, then I like the rainbow. I’m working on a new throw that is going to be two panels crocheted together and then a black border around it. I can send you a picture when it’s done.

I vote for “Random” — it is beautiful! But I do see that it’s not *really* random. There is a pattern there. 😀 Great job!

Definitely random!!! I love to crochet and in my spare time I sell what I make. It’s so true what you said…how to make the time is crazy but I definitely get them done during car rides, appts, etc. Pockets of time 🙂

I really like both of them, and would say it depends most on your daughter. But if I had to choose for myself, I would definitely choose the random arrangement. (And it is hard for me to go truly random also, but I think you did a good job on that. 🙂

    • Angela says:

Lol! I chose random….but it still isn’t done. I was really close and realized I stitched it all together backwards and had to rip it out 🙁
