Spending Freeze: Day 14

 Photobucket

I’m guest posting over at The Modest Mom today. I first me Caroline when I was a freshman in college and she was Homeschooling with her Mom.  It was one of my first introductions to homeschooling and one of the reasons I homeschooled my own children for so long. She has had a lot of positive influence in my life both as a business woman and as a mother.  Come visit with me today.

Tomorrow, I’m going to start a mini series on shrinking those grocery bills step by step.  Today, it’s time to reflect over the last two weeks.  Can you believe it? We’ve been in our spending freeze for two whole weeks!

I have to admit that I messed up this week.  I was helping my mom shop online for some replacement filters for her vacuum.  We found such a great deal that I bought a set for myself too. I totally forgot for the moment that I was in a freeze. (I will use those filters though….)

It has gotten easier for me otherwise.  I’ve settled into a nice rhythm staying home and getting more done.  We’ve been eating from our pantry and using the lowest cost foods we have.  More on that tomorrow.

So tell me about you. Any success stories to tell?  Any mess ups?  Can you still remember your goal?

    Hi Angela,

I messed up this week too. However, I knew what I was doing and why I allowed myself to slip up. I read your post- Caution: Slippery Ahead and didn’t take the time to think about my trigger(s) to spending. Sure enough, I had a “woe is me” moment and used that as an opportunity to go the bookstore and purchase a newly released book. I wanted a pick me up.

The irony is that if I wasn’t on a spending freeze, I wouldn’t have gone to the bookstore and would have waited instead to borrow it from the library. I will continue on this spending freeze despite the mess up because I am learning valuable lessons along the way.

Yolanda, I’m glad you aren’t letting one bad moment derail you. It is ironic that your usual habit is to get it from the library–that’s a good habit. You can always buy the ones you love so much you need to keep them around all the time.

    Hi Angela,
While I was able to resist the ‘after Christmas’ sales, my husband and I both got sick and ended up at urgent care. We tried making an appointment at a Dr’s office but because we were new, they wouldn’t see us. At urgent care, it ended up costing us $150 for copays and unnecessary testing (like testing me for the flu when I could have told you that’s not what I had). Then my husbands grandfather passed away, so we traveled out of state for a few days and now my kids are sick (they went to their Dr’s today-the 5 year old with upper respiratory infection-virus, and the 7 month old has RSV-virus. To top it off, while in the shower today, the shower head nozzle completely fell apart and in the middle of the shower, had to move the the other bathroom. So we will be shopping for a new one of those. I’m kind of hoping for a redo in Feb.

Oh Beth, I hate that this is happening to you! It seems like when you try really hard to save money and make good choices, the “testing” comes. Praying for peace through your loss and for health for your family (and your home :).)
