Gardens for Small Spaces

If you have a porch, balcony, deck or patio, it’s possible to have a vegetable garden–even if you don’t have any yard space.  Our yard is so small that I grow my vegetables in flower beds.  I don’t even want to take up enough space for a square foot garden, because I want to leave as much as possible for the children to play.  Here’s a photo of my garden space:

I know many of you have even less space than I do, and it’s amazing what can be grown in containers!  Here’s are a couple if inspirational youtube videos.  The one change I would make is to use Mel Barthalowmew’s mix of 1/3 compost, 1/3 coarse vermiculite, and 1/3 peat moss instead of soil.

Another interesting small space idea is growing potatoes in a container garden!  This is something I’d really like to try.  Diane from Lovetolearn.net has great instructions here.

I love the photo of you using your flower beds to grow veggies etc. It literally looks beautiful as well as being functional!!! Yeah, I’m going to try container gardening at some point. It’s not in my budget right now. However, spring is right around the corner, so I’m hoping to try at least one thing…either rhubarb or zucchini. I actually have a nice porch…concrete floor and wood fence around the porch 🙂 🙂 Thanks for the YouTube tutorials!!! Love and hugs from Oregon, Heather 🙂

Mel’s book the Square Foot Gardener is my gardening bible. I had several containers going at our home in WA. I even grew corn in three of the boxes. It was amazing. The one thing I don’t like to grow is broccolli. Does anyone know a natural way to keep the green worms from getting all over? Yeeee-uck!

hmmm… Angela the youtube links aren’t showing up? Is there a missing link somewhere? Thanks for the reminder though! I love container stuff. We put in 2 growing boxes in our front yard last year and got more out of them than our big garden. The deer enjoyed it too! LOL, so we try to plant stuff they don’t like. (Haven’t figured out what that is yet, someone told us “plant lavender around the gardens to keep them out” – they ate the lavender!) This year we hope to fence in the yard and get a dog.
