The wall is gone

Current view from the living room

Nothing a little elbow grease and a crowbar can’t handle.  Notice, one project at a time for me.  I let the kitchen get to total disaster state while taking down the wall.

I learned that Sawzalls are empowering.

After, no more shadows from the wall. Let the sunshine in (tomorrow.)

“Hey Mom, Now that you’ve cleaned up the wall–and washed the dishes and scrubbed the floor, I think I’ll empty out the cabinet here.”

Kelly, You make it sound better than it was, lol. It took me 2 days (notice the wardrobe change.) We had hot dogs one night and frozen pizza the other. My younger days I’d have done all that and cooked from scratch too–just thinking about it gives me a headache, lol.

Heather, yep–a few kiddoes ago. The first remodel around was pretty traumatic for me. No paper plates, no take out, no frozen dinners. Just me, a crock pot, and an electric skillet (and a bathtub to wash it in.) Going through it was so tough my body threatened convulsions if I had to do it again, lol. So I bought paper plates, convenience foods, and decided not to feel one ounce guilty :).

Woohoo! I know you are so excited to get that thing out of there! I can’t wait to see what you do next!

New to your blog, so I don’t know your history. Since it was made up of multiple 2×4’s, and not just framed in to hold drywall, I assume you checked whether it was a weight bearing wall and made the structural changes needed.

Oliva, Welcome! Thanks for taking the time to comment. We did have an engineer come check it out and we have original blueprints too. Turns out there is only one band of support walls down the center of the house. I can remove the rest and still leave it better than code. The extra 2x4s were to support the framing for the windows. The previous owners had vinyl stainglass looking things hanging in the windows, but removing them has made it much brighter and lighter in the space.

P.S. The original design thought on the wall was to hide the ktichen and dirty dishes from the formal living room. Since we are moving the kitchen to the other end of the house, this is a non issue for us. Although I imagine I will still have dirty dishes. Though maybe not….Darren just approved TWO dishwashers in our new design.

Girl, did we start our projects at the same time? wow, I feel your pain. We have replaced all the paneling in our sons room with sheetrock, and have mudded and now sanded. then we get to spend the day painting. Oh, did I mention we’ve ripped up the living room carpet and have started a new floor project too? All this and cleaned, cooked, and even had a fun day out at an amusement park. Im totally exhausted but we are finally getting toward the end of project one, and working toward stage one of project two to get done. Wishing you well.
