Grant likes Pomegranates

image

The first time we tasted a real pomegranate was 3 years ago. My MIL worked in a local food pantry and several cases of the fruit were donated. None of the underprivileged would take them–at least there, they preferred cakes, doughnuts, and prepackaged foods. And often left the fresh fruits and veggies to rot.

They were going to have to throw them away, so my MIL brought them to me, dozens of them.  I had never seen one before and was shocked when I broke into it. It was like a cache of rubies! The gems were filled with the most delicious juice and a tiny seed that gave just the right amount of crunch.

image

I was hooked. But the fruit are expensive! We hadn’t had once since…Until today. Aldi had a sale and I bought just 1. I peeled it this morning and rubbed the little rubies free of their white membrane.

Grant was instantly by my side as if to say, “What lovely thing do you have there?” I gave him a taste expecting that to be the end of it. I thought the seeds would deter him.
image

But instead, he snatched the entire bowl for himself. He ate the whole thing cupping his baby hand around the spoon as he brought it to his mouth so none of the precious rubies would fall to the ground.

I’m glad he likes healthy food. I wish I bought 2 🙂

BOT Day 3 Food Journal

Food I’m not eating today:

image

Pepparkakor: Sweedish spiced cookies for my son’s Country project.

image

Ham and cheese calzones for the kids’ brown bag lunches made from half the Award winning dough.

image

Loaf made from the other half of award winning dough.

For breakfast I had Greek yogurt and strawberries.

image

For snack I had a pure protein bar:

I’m looking forward to another apple salad for lunch while my boys enjoy their calzones and veggies with dip.

Snack: Greek yogurt chocolate mousse and strawberries. I had to really fight the temptation to take a spoon and finish off the rest of the whipped topping container. I had hummus and carrots instead.
image

The foods I’m NOT eating today are causing quite a distraction. I can hear them taunting me from inside their platic wraps. Hopefully some hungry children will come home soon and finish them off.

Still ravenous, so I ate 1 oz of raw, frozen almonds. I love to eat frozen nuts! They are sooo crunchy!

image

I primed all the trim in the dining room today. It took forever and is taking even longer to dry, but I’m really going to like it. Everything is so much lighter and cheerier. I didn’t have a lot of time to fix dinner and I finally got tired of apple salad 🙂 So I ate what the rest of the family had: Ground beef Lo Mein with whole grain pasta. It was delicious and even my picky eaters devoured it.

image

I was still hungry after my one cup portion so I added a huge salad with 1/2 cup mandrain oranges, 2 Tbs of honey roasted peanuts and 2 Tbs of fat free French dressing.

Totals for the day are 1602 calories and 100 grams of protein. I feel fantastic!

Fall Colors on a Missouri Drive–Plus guess the answer

Darren preached in Macon yesterday. It was a 3 hour drive. We left home with 3 kids in tow at 6:30 so I slept most of the way. My eyes popped open when we were 30 minutes out and I was overcome with how beautiful the trees were.  I snapped sone pictures:

Grant enjoyed the drive too 🙂

The older children stayed home and went to our regular church for the first Christmas program rehearsal. It’s hard to believe it’s already that time of year. Speaking of Christmas, do you know when the cheapest prices are for buying Christmas gifts? Put your guess in the comments below and I’ll reveal the answer later this week.

Heather’s No-Stress Birthday

Our quest for a very special birthday for Heather (without throwing a party) started with me taking the day off and farming the other children out to Grandma’s so Heather could have my undivided attention. We baked a cake from a strawberry boxed mix and then headed to the mall.

Since Heather loves to shop, I didn’t buy her any gifts ahead of time.  I gave her the money and then helped her choose her own gifts.  She bought a new lunch bag and water bottle set from Old Navy.  A red feather and flower hair pretty to go with her school uniform.  Clip on earrings (Buy 2 get 1 free from Claires.) Candy necklaces and candy treats for her siblings at Dollar Tree (plus fancy paper plates and table decor), and then we went to buy the food for dinner at Aldi.

Once we got home, Heather and I cooked dinner for our family, plus my parents, and my brother and his family.  And we decorated her cake. She did most of it.  I was pretty impressed :).

The sugar cones are sprinkled with rainbow nerds. All the candies on the cake were from Dollar Tree, then we passed all the leftovers around after dinner, so they wouldn’t tempt me later.  I threw away all the leftovers because I have no self-control when it comes to sweets.

This was the least stressful birthday celebration yet and we made lots of great memories together.

Happy 9th Sweetie!  You are growing up so fast!

Sweet Potatoes!

Grandpa Coffman grew some giant sweet potatoes this year!  And he shared with us.  So I have been scouring the web for some new recipes to use the bounty.  Here are some in my must try file.

Betty Crocker's Mashed Sweet Potatoes with Bacon

Betty Crocker's Slow Cooker Sweet Potatoes with Applesauce

 Sweet Potato Hash Browns

Sweet Potato Pancakes

Sweet Potato Waffles

And since we love potato and eggs for breakfast, I’m going to try some breakfast favorites  like:  Egg Burritos and Frittata.

Ideas for the Living Room

Here’s a rough illustration of my idea for my living room. Below is a reminder picture of what the room looks like now:

I’ve been watching the individual pieces of furniture for their prices to drop within range.  And snagged the printed chair from Target this week when it went on sale.  It’s not very comfy…but sure is cute, lol.  My friend and I are talking about trading pianos.  Her baby grand won’t fit in her new house and my Betsy Ross Spinet would be perfect. I’m hoping the holiday weekend will bring the lower prices I’ve been waiting for so I can snag some more pieces.  I’ve been donating plasma twice a week for several months saving up the money for when the prices drop.

I’ve picked out a paint color called Silver Drop from Behr and will use Ultra pure white on the moldings.  I’d love to add extra wall moldings and crown molding too.  But with my new teaching job I’m not sure how to fit it all in.   It will happen one day….just a little project at a time.

Homemade and Healthy to Go

I’ve written a new eBook!  And now you know why my blog has been a little quiet this summer.  It’s finished, but not quite available yet.  My Grocery Shrink Plus subscribers get the first peek, and they get it for FREE.  The book will sell for $10 to all non-subscribers and at 100 pages of ideas and recipes for packing frugal lunches, it’s well worth the cost.  But there’s no reason not to get it free.

I have more resources in the works and with school starting soon, will have more time to work than ever.  Grocery Shrink Plus subscribers can expect to get a free resource similar to this every month they stay members in good standing.  Now I call that an upgrade!  Not only do you get more recipes, more instructions, more value in your meal plans than any other service….you get free bonus’s too.

There’s still time to subscribe to the menu’s before the bonus goes out, but you need to subscribe before Monday August 13th.  I won’t be emailing out separate bonus’s to all late subscribers like I do the menu plans.  It’s a one time mail out to current subscribers at the moment I hit send.  No exceptions, no apologies.  Make sure you’re on that list :).

Do Ultimate Body Applicators really work?

You know the ones I’m talking about.  The body wraps that claim to tighten, tone and firm.  To reduce the appearance of cellulite.  Is it to good to be true?

I invited a local consultant, Amy Castillo, to my home to give it the test.  She brought one wrap, and I elected to use it on my stomach–my troublesome area after having 6 babies.  She spent some time with me ahead and explained that the wraps contain an herbal cream designed to reduce the fat cells.  She said I could see some results after 45 minutes, but I could reapply the wrap for up to 8 hours for maximum efficiency.   She said to make sure I drink a lot of water during the process as this would help expel toxins.  (I ended up drinking about 32 oz in 45 minutes.)

First we cleansed the skin with a witch hazel spray. This helps clean the skin and keeps the pores open so that nothing blocks the skin from absorbing the gel from the werap. Then she applied the wrap to my trouble spot and wrapped it securely with plastic wrap to help it stay in place.  While we waited for the 45 minute timer to ring, I nursed Grant to sleep, and drank water while we talked.  She mentioned that the wraps could be cut and used anywhere on the body. Popular places are things, arms, and special wraps are even used on the face.

It smelled minty and tingled like applying a muscle rub.  The wrap was very thin and had a plastic type back to keep the cream from coming through to the back side. It did not look smooth like the pictures, but did the job just the same.

I looked through the pamphlets she brought and saw some pretty dramatic before and after pictures.  Amy was up front with me and said those ladies used several wraps to achieve their results, each done 3 days apart and kept on for up to 8 hours.  A 4 wrap value pack is sold for $60 which is $15 per wrap.

I should reveal that my air conditioner was broken in my home during this time and it was pretty warm in there.  (Over 100 degrees outside for several days running.) The heat was helping me retain more water than usual.  I asked Amy if the wrap worked by getting rid of excess water in the fat cells.  She said, “No.”  But that the inches lost were from toxin removal.  My weight had been steady for over a week, despite my efforts at eating right and exercising.  The heat was kicking my tail!

After the 45 minutes, we took measurements and photos.  Then I reapplied the wrap for the rest of the afternoon.  I used a lycra maternity belly band from Target to hold it on the second time.  That was more comfortable for me than the plastic wrap.  After 5 more hours, I was ready to be done.  But it was REALLY hot in my house.

Amy had a fancy tape measure from the company that made sure you couldn’t measure incorrectly. The before and after 45 minute measurements were taken by her with the special tape measure. The after 1 day and after 3 day measurements were taken with my normal dressmaker’s tape.  I wish I had thought to follow her measurements with my own tape so I could have a comparison with the same tape for all. Also she made lines on my back with a sharpie so we would be sure to measure in the exact same spot each time.

So here are my personal results:

Upper Waist before:  32.25″ After 45 minutes: 32″ After 1 day: 32.5″ After 3 days: 32″  Total lost  1/4 inch

Naval Before: 35″ After 45 minutes 34.5 After 1 day: 35.25 After 3 days: 34.25  Total Lost: 3/4 inch

Mommy Tummy (below waist) before: 37.5 After 45 minutes: 37.5 After 1 day: 36.5 After 3 days: 36.5 Total Lost: 1 inch

Total overall losses:  2 inches.  Not too shabby.

And my pictures (before and after 45 minutes only):

My final thoughts:  The wrap smelled great, had healthful ingredients, and did remove 2 inches in 3 days.  My skin looked a tiny bit smoother, and I’m interested to see what a full 4 wrap program would do for my stretch marks.  Would I use these wraps alone as a weight loss regime?  No.  A healthy diet and exercise are important for building muscle and for continued health–but I would use them along side a good fitness program.  And to help the appearance of the skin. Amy noted the company does not promote only using the wraps for weight loss, etc. They state that maintaining a healthy lifestyle (ie. eating well, exercise, etc) is important or like any weight loss program, if you don’t make a lifestyle change, you won’t maintain any results. The wraps help give individuals a jump start or encouragement to continue to see results WHILE they continue on their way to a healthy way of life. The wraps helps to tighten, tone and firm areas that regular exercise may not (i.e. stretch marks, saggy/excess skin).

The company Amy represents also carries vitamins, powdered greens, face care products, defining gel and more.  She can ship products anywhere in the US and can help you earn money for your family by selling your own wrap products (and getting a nice discount in the process.)  She says:  “I am really looking for distributors in US, Australia, Canada, UK, N. Ireland, Sweden, Holland, Scotland and Wales (those are the countries we are currently in). Readers can buy one from me for $30 (if in KC area, I can wrap them personally)….if not, we can arrange payment (like by Paypal) and I can mail it and send them youtube videos and info on how to do it.

New Gifts

I’m busy choosing the winners of our summer recipe contest, but wanted to update you on the gifts I am offering sponsors for The Women’s Clinic through the 5K event.

I was pretty discouraged after I posted my last offer, because even though my blog analytics showed that more than 700 people read it, only one person responded.  Today, I’m choosing to take hope.  History has proven, by the actions of 1 person have many great things begun!

I know my readers here.  You advocate life.  You love your children and your families.  You are compassionate to the needs of others.  But I also know that money is tight right now.  I get that.  That is why I’m offering a gift in exchange for your support of The Women’s Clinic.

And I’m making my offer more generous.

For any size gift, you can choose any item from my store here or at my etsy shop.  The gift does not have to match the cost of the item.  It can be less or more!

When you donate, it becomes an investment in life. It makes a difference, AND in return you invest in you.  By taking my gift and using it you will bless your own family and grow financially.

You can donate either on my page or Heidi’s page and qualify for the free gift.  Be sure to include your email address on the donation page and your choice of gift in the comments so I can send your gifts to you. Right now I am in 5th place for collecting donations, and the competition is building.  Will you help today?

Summer Transformation Challenge and Checking In

We are back from Reunion and I have some photos and video to post later from Heather’s baptism.  What a lovely, glorious day!  I’ve been busy catching up on laundry and housework since then.

I also joined Holly’s Summer Transformation Challenge (STC) over at Club FYM.  I love it over there and writing in my journal takes the place of some of why I write here.  So when I’m in a challenge with Fit Yummy Mummy, I tend to want to neglect my blog.  I’m going to try hard not to do that this time.  As part of that challenge I’m writing a meal plan for 1–that coincides with what my family is eating too.  Theirs has more carbs and calories since they are all skinny.  But we are all eating healthy.  Here’s my plan for this week:

You can click on the image to see it bigger if the print is hard to read. PI stands for Planned Indulgence.

Also new for me, I’ve started teaching a sewing class on Monday nights in my new office.  It’s great fun! And right now am working on sewing my fall jacket that I’ve had fabric and pattern for over a year and never made the time to make it. I’m using this from Fabric.com:

with this pattern:
